WHAT HAPPENED?

CoC networks' performance has degraded.

WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?

Beginning at approximately 1:00 AM, Wednesday, December 2, 2009.

WHY DID IT HAPPEN?

The core router is experiencing high CPU usage, due to a large amount of ARP traffic coming into the outland subnet 131.

WHO WAS AFFECTED?

Faculty, staff, and students attempting to use the CoC network.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

Some web pages may not initially load or drives may not be mounted. A refresh/retry has resolved these problems. Further instructions will be relayed should they become necessary.

HAS THE PROBLEM BEEN RESOLVED?

No. TSO has worked on the issue through the night. OIT was notified and advised they would begin working on the issue at 7:00 AM, December 2.

Update: A machine on outland was identified that was spamming arp traffic. It was isolated and its network port disabled at approximately 11:10 AM, December 2, at which point the CPU load on the core router returned to normal. The machine owner has been notified. At this time, network performance has returned to normal.
