On Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at 6:00 PM, TSO plans to retire the general access server lennon.cc.gatech.edu. As a result, IMAPS and POPS services running on lennon will be retired as well. This is the last centrally maintained server offering IMAPS and POPS in the College. CoC faculty and students that use IMAPS and POPS to store old mail will be affected by the retirement of these services running on lennon. This action is being taken to maximize our budget and TSO staff, and is in line with our strategic initiative of utilizing commoditized campus resources. OIT currently provides IMAPS and POPS service for your campus mail account.
Lennon was set for end-of-life support by Sun Microsystems in December 2005, so third party hardware support costs have continued to increase as refurbished parts become more difficult to locate. The latest annual support contract cost for lennon exceeded $660.00. While this amount is not that much money, the actual expense to the College is located in the consumption of disk space, backup tapes and the cycles of a TSO staff member to maintain the service.
Prior to lennon?s retirement, CoC faculty and students will need to migrate their archived email to another email server such as OIT Zimbra/MyGaTech or move it to their local system. Instructions for transferring mail to OIT Zimbra/MyGaTech are provided on the TSO website at http://support.cc.gatech.edu/services/e-mail-1#zimbra. If users decide to move their archived email to a non-GT email server, please ensure that these emails do not contain Category 3 or 4 data. Please see the GT Data Access Policy at http://www.oit.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/DAP.pdf for details on the categories.
If these two services are required, the College would need to replace lennon with newer rack mountable hardware, purchase additional disk storage and backup tapes to address the issue of space being consumed by users that download their email from the campus mail service and store it in their CoC home directory.
